Ode to the Weary

Outside, by the water, we built shelter, from the downpour
Built fire from the cold,
and we searched, knowing there was more

The waves crashed upon the beach, as a silent ship passed by
And as it sailed on its journey,
I stared into the flames before me

And time goes on and on, its fabric cannot be torn
People tread in streets like apparitions,
and cry silently, knowing there is more

As light from the bridge, shone down into our peace
and words had no place,
as nothing truer could be spoken

And knowing that feeling pain, it’s deafening inner roar,
is better than feeling nothing at all,
we search, knowing there is more

We could have taken shelter, in the safety of bricks and mortar
But the rain seemed to cleanse,
seemed to wash away all we knew

And knowing in essence, that all beauty is the same at its core
That pain is its beginning,
we search, knowing there is more

As we sat beneath crude shelter, made from sticks and canvas
With my head heavy in my hands,
my eyes grew weary

And those who had lived already, and all that came before
Their chance in the sun, their lives led,
always knowing there was more

The rain refused to falter, we were drenched to the bone,
our clothes clung to us like ribbons,
and we stood faces up, catching the rain

And the light which once burned brightly, and stood proud beside the shore
now flickers in dying embers,
as we search, knowing there is more.
